Welcome readers! I’m a fiction and nonfiction author for children (and their adults). I’ve enjoyed writing since I was a kid and I’ve always been a conservationist and nature lover. Yet I never considered a career as an author or an environmentalist. Today, though, I do both! I write books for kids that showcase our amazing planet and all its biodiversity, and encourage kids to unplug, explore, and use their imagination.
The research I do as an author has deepened the love and respect I have for the natural world. I find the COOLEST facts as I dig. I often go WHOA, NO WAY! For example, did you know Alaskan wood frogs FREEZE SOLID every winter? Then thaw out in the spring and hop away. And that wetlands are Earth’s natural filters as well as buffers against storms? Ever heard of a velvet worm? Click here. I could go on and on and on. I am constantly amazed by our planet. Yet I am also worried about it.
As an author, I want to help kids think about the world we live in – to be as amazed as I am. I want to help inspire wonder and understanding. Because that leads to caring, which leads to action. In the words of Dr. Seuss… “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
When I’m not researching and writing, I can often be found outdoors – hiking, running, and exploring. And Colorado is the perfect playground. Nothing beats a hike to a high mountain lake in the summer, meadows of wildflowers, and the endless blue Colorado sky. Aside from hiking and running shoes, my favorite footwear is a pair of flip flops.
