Second Star to the Right Children’s Bookstore is honored to be named Denver A-List’s Best Bookstore for the second straight year. The independent children’s and young adult bookstore opened in November of 2014, but it has already become a Highlands favorite. Second Star to the Right added a win in Denver A-List’s Best Children’s Gift category in 2017 as well.
It’s so nice to know that the magic we create at Second Star is appreciated and loved by kids and grown ups alike,” said Second Star to the Right owner Dea Lavoie. “It’s truly heart warming to know that the love we have for our community and fellow readers (and their parents) is reciprocated.”
In the current world ruled by phones, tablets, social media chaos and an app for everything, Second to the Right owners Marc and Dea Lavoie are determined to keep physical books in the hands of young people. The devoted duo opened their dream bookstore in November of 2014 to further the work they’d previously done as educators and feed kids’ minds and imaginations. They dreamt of creating a fun-filled environment for children that fosters a life-long love of reading at an early age. The passionate pair and their dedicated staff have built just that in the Tennyson street shop. From the reading nook and comfy chairs to the daily story times and fun kid-themed events held throughout the year in the shop’s Rumpus Room, Second Star is a safe haven for everyone who enters the store’s doors.
Every staff member is extremely knowledgeable on the store’s vast and diverse inventory and can advise young readers, gift buyers and parents on the perfect book title for their interests and reading level. Second Star opened the toy room in November of 2016 and recently added a free play hour for kids and adults to enjoy weekly.
While all of the store’s customers love to come in and peruse the shelves for a new book, Second Star’s daily and weekly events often shine the brightest. Second Star story time takes place every day at 10:30 a.m., with the theme and the reader changing daily. Special guests, including authors, Denver Police OfficerRobbie, area senior citizens, and fun characters make regular appearances for Second Star story time and other fun events.
Second Star is also working with Denver-area schools to bring authors and illustrators in to classrooms to showcase their books. Several Colorado authors have made special trips to Second Star and many more are scheduled to appear at the store over the coming months. The shop’s youngest staffer, 14-year-old Aspen Coates recently hosted her own author event with Colorado young adult author Scott Bergstrom sharing his highly successful novel, “The Cruelty.” The high school freshman facilitated every detail from start to finish after reading the book through Second Star’s young adult advisory board. Coates’ event was a rousing success and she looks forward to hosting future events at both the store and her high school.
As Second Star heads in to its third year of existence, the little bookstore that could looks forward to meeting more of Denver’s youngsters and continuing to share the love of books and the tales that they tell.
