Second Star to the Right Children’s Bookstore Celebrates the Value of Kindness

Since Second Star to the Right Children’s Bookstore opened in November of 2014, owners Marc and Dea Lavoie have worked to create a safe and nurturing place for all of their customers. With the tension currently being felt in the United States, Denver A-List’s Best Bookstore wanted to remind everyone who entered the Tennyson Street store of the value of being kind to one another by celebrating Kindness Month in February.

Second Star Kindness Month kicked off on February 3 with a “Spread Smiles” event in conjunction with Tennyson Street’s First Friday activities. The Second Star staff decorated a full wall in the store’s Rumpus Room with kind and encouraging it post-it notes for visitors to read and even take if they wished. Throughout the month, customers grabbed post-its that spoke to them and even added kind wishes and positive thoughts of their own. The wall of post-its was such a hit that young Second Star fans even created walls of their own at home.

Yet the post-its of positivity weren’t the only means of spreading joy created by Second Star. During the Spread Smiles event, staff and visitors wrote kind letters to strangers and took one of their own for a little
extra encouragement. The special notes were distributed throughout the month to help provide a pick-up for those who needed it.

Daily story time is often the highlight of the day at Second Star to the Right and February was no exception. The theme of kindness was celebrated in multiple story times throughout the month, including a special random of act of kindness reading, a visit from Denver Police Officer Robbie, a puppy adoption event and Senior-Tot story time with a visitor from senior organization – A Little Help.

The month even included a Snow White Tea Party where the youngsters learned about etiquette and manners while dining on tea and cookies with the Disney character.

While there was a special emphasis on kindness in February, Second Star to the Right collects donations for the Bienvenidos Food Book and A Precious Child throughout the year and many generous customers brought boxes and bags of donations for the two very deserving charities during the month of February.

Although Kindness Month is now complete, Second Star plans to continue sharing the value of kindness, love and acceptance daily and show their customers of all ages that they are perfect just the way they are.
