Feeding Young People’s Minds One Book at a Time

In our current world of phones, tablets, social media chaos and an app for everything, Second to the Right Children’s Bookstore owners Marc and Dea Lavoie are determined to keep actual books in the hands of young people. The devoted duo opened their dream bookstore in November of 2014 to further the work they’d previously done as educators and feed kids’ minds and imaginations.

Dea Lavoie, who imagines herself as Meg Ryan’s character in the movie “You’ve Got Mail,” is extremely
passionate about instilling the love of reading and books early in life. “When I was teaching, I would get so excited when a child discovered a love of books. I believe that every child loves to read, it’s just a matter of finding the books that speak to them,” she said.

Now over two years old, Second Star to the Right houses thousands of titles ranging from parenting guides and board books for little ones up through young adult novels for older and more advanced readers. The store’s knowledgeable staff is skilled in finding the perfect book for any age, interest and reading level and the Second Star team loves guiding their customer to the perfect children’s gift. The store’s crew stays updated on all of the latest trends and titles in the industry and along with the middle reader and young adult advisory boards helps to provide valuable input on the books that Second Star orders.

Finding the perfect title isn’t the only thing the Second Star family excels in. The staff’s mix of theater, music, education and literature backgrounds creates the perfect group of readers for the store’s daily story time at 10:30 a.m. With the story time theme changing daily, Second Star often welcomes visitors to lead with special guests including Denver Police Officer Robbie, friends from the senior citizen group, A Little Help, the Lil Kickers soccer group, and much more.

Yet daily story time isn’t the only time that Second Star to the Right welcomes visitors. The bustling bookstore is also a favorite locale for children’s, middle reader and young adult authors. Second Star is very supportive of the authors who bring wonderful stories in to our lives. The store regularly hosts authors from various genres and is currently working with area schools to bring top writers and illustrators in to classrooms throughout Denver on a regular basis.  Second Star’s youngest staffer, 14-year-old Aspen Coates recently hosted her own author event with Colorado young adult author Scott Bergstrom for his highly successful novel, “The Cruelty.” The high school freshman facilitated every detail from start to finish after reading the book through Second Star’s young adult advisory board. Her first event was a rousing success with a full crowd in the store’s event space, The Rumpus Room, enjoying all of Bergstrom’s tales about writing his debut novel and what he learned from the experience.

There are many aspiring writers, editors, illustrators and artists among Second Star’s young customer base and Second Star wants to nurture all of their passion and creativity. Several of the top professionals in their fields will be hosting special workshops and camps this summer for all the young people looking to follow in their footsteps. From young writer’s classes and poetry workshops to special illustration and comic book creation intensives, Second Star is focused on feeding young people’s minds in several areas throughout their summer break from school.
